The summer vacation is gradually finding its end and I hope you have enjoyed some good weeks with family, friends, travel, etc.

Back at work, it can be a good idea to create time and space to think and reflect on the market you are in. In this context, it is natural to look at how to create new revenue opportunities within your business with new initiatives and products. In this newsletter we will focus on revenue opportunities and business models in e-publishing and we describe various forms of payment and subscription options on the web, smartphones and tablets.

Digital subscriptions as an independent product

In Norway, we have seen an interesting trend in the sales of the digital newspaper on the Internet, smartphones and tablets. 

Where most newspapers until have chosen to include the access to the digital products with the existing paper subscription, there are now good examples of media houses, which ties together the entire digital product line into a completely independent subscription package.

New digital forms of payment

Many media houses and publishers have so far chosen to go the safe route in terms of reader payment of the daily digital newspaper. Therefore, most solutions today are based on the digital newspaper as an extra benefit attached to an existing print subscription and thus part of a full package to the subscriber.

New advertising opportunities on smartphones and tablets

The revenue streams of the media houses and magazine publishers have always been based on two main sources: copy sales and advertising. In typical online services the ad sales is the biggest driver, and thus there is a big focus on the advertising opportunities on tablet and smartphone editions.
